Q: I had my phone number for 20 years, so it's really important to me to keep it. If I switch to VoIP services, can I keep my current phone number?
A: We know how important it is to keep your long phone number and thankfully all hospitality services VoIP we review - with the exception of Skype - allows you to transfer or port your phone number to the VoIP service without additional charge. This process is simple and begins the day you register.
It is important that you do not cancel your existing phone service before the transfer is complete, because the cancellation prior to the completion of the transfer can make you lose your phone number rights. In most cases, the port takes about five to 10 days and once the porting is complete your previous phone service will be canceled.
To begin porting, you must provide the VoIP service with information from your existing phone service, so it is helpful to have a copy of your current bill close to make sure you enter information accurately. This information typically includes your name, phone number, phone provider and account number for this provider.
PORTING can be confusing and the process can vary from service to service, so please contact the VoIP service directly for complete details on how you can transfer your phone number to this service.
